What to Expect When You’re Expecting
The second trimester is often called the “feel-good” stage of pregnancy. For many women, morning sickness fades, energy returns, and the baby bump starts to show. But as your body grows and changes, new aches and pains can pop up too—especially in your back and pelvis.
That’s where physiotherapy can really help. A physiotherapist who understands pregnancy can guide you through this stage and help you feel more comfortable and confident.
1. Relieves Back and Pelvic Pain
As your baby grows, your belly gets heavier and your posture starts to shift. This can cause pain in your lower back, hips, and pelvis. Some women also feel pressure or discomfort around the pubic bone or tailbone.
A physiotherapist can show you safe exercises and stretches that take pressure off these areas. They can also provide manual therapy – massage, tissue releases and stretches that can help relieve your pain and keep you moving.
2. Keeps You Moving Safely
Staying active in the second trimester is great for your body and your baby—but not all exercises are safe during pregnancy. A physiotherapist can help you find the right types of movement, like gentle strength training, walking tips, or prenatal yoga. These help keep your muscles strong and prepare you for labor and delivery.
3. Supports Your Core and Pelvic Floor
Your abdominal muscles and pelvic floor are working hard to support your growing baby. A physiotherapist can teach you safe core exercises that avoid putting too much pressure on your belly. They’ll also continue to help you build pelvic floor strength to prevent bladder leaks and improve recovery after birth.
4. Improves Sleep and Daily Comfort
Many pregnant women start to feel uncomfortable when sleeping, walking, or even sitting. A physiotherapist can recommend better sleeping positions, cushions or supports, and gentle stretches to help you feel more relaxed and rested.
The second trimester is a great time to check in with a physiotherapist. They can help reduce pain, keep you active, and support your changing body as your baby grows. Taking care of yourself now will help you feel stronger and more ready for the next stage of pregnancy—and beyond.
