Your hip joint is the largest joint in your body, designed for stability, weight bearing and a large range of movement. Unfortunately, this large range of movement and the number of structures involved in your hip and groin area mean that these areas can often be more prone to injury and the source of the pain can be difficult to assess.
At Proactive Physiotherapy, our experienced physiotherapists focus on the assessment, management and rehabilitation of hip and groin injuries.
Common symptoms of hip and groin injury
If you have a chronic or acute hip and groin injury, some of the symptoms you may experience include:
Pain and tenderness in your groin, hip and the inside of your thigh
Pain when weight bearing in your leg
A pinching sensation in your hip with certain movements
Stiffness, bruising and swelling in and around your hip area
Reduced strength and range of motion in your groin and hip areas.
A popping or snapping feeling when moving in a certain way, followed by severe pain
What causes hip and groin injuries?
Because your hip joints are made up of many different parts that work together to provide stability, sometimes pain in your hip and groin area is actually caused from injury to another area of your body.
Sudden traumatic injury, such as car accidents
Sports impact injuries and skiing injuries
Poor postural positions
Muscular imbalances
Repetitive activities or adverse nerve tension
Muscle strains, especially among athletes
Arthritis, especially among older people
“Referred” pain from another area of your body
By working to identify the contributing factors of your hip and groin pain, our team at Proactive Physiotherapy aims to provide tailored management, whether your hip and groin pain has been sudden or has gradually become more painful
How we treat and manage hip and groin injuries
Your hip provides stability when you’re standing, as well as when you are sitting down, which is why it’s important to develop the strength you need to control your hip joint, as well as addressing any biomechanical issues.
After we assess the cause of your hip and groin injury, our treatment program is designed to restore range of movement and reduce soft tissue restriction, using a combination of manual therapy and an exercise rehabilitation program.
As well as treating your hip and groin injury, we also create a preventative programme tailored to your specific presentation and lifestyle, designed to help reduce the risk of your hip and groin injuries recurring
