What to Expect When You’re Expecting
Finding out you're pregnant can be exciting, surprising, and even a little scary—especially if it’s your first time. Your body starts changing right away, even in the first few weeks. That’s why getting support early on is so important. One great way to take care of yourself during this time is through physiotherapy.
You might be thinking, “Isn’t physiotherapy just for injuries?” Not at all! Physiotherapy can actually help new mums feel better, move better, and prepare for the rest of their pregnancy—starting in the first trimester.
1. Eases Early Pregnancy Discomfort
In the first trimester, many women feel tired, sore, or sick (hello, morning sickness!). A physiotherapist can teach you simple breathing and relaxation techniques to help your body feel more at ease. They can also recommend gentle movements to keep you comfortable and reduce nausea or tension.
2. Helps with Aches and Pains
Even early in pregnancy, your body starts to shift. Hormones make your joints and muscles loosen up to get ready for the baby. This can cause back pain, sore hips, or tight shoulders. A physiotherapist can show you safe stretches and exercises to reduce pain and support your changing body. Exercise is the best thing for you and your baby during pregnancy to keep both of you healthy – your physio can work with you to let you know exactly what you should be doing!
3. Strengthens Your Pelvic Floor
Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles at the bottom of your pelvis. These muscles help control your bladder and support your growing baby. A physiotherapist can teach you how to understand these muscles early in pregnancy, which can help prevent leaks and other issues later on, and make birth and delivery easier and quicker
4. Gives You Confidence and Support
The first trimester is full of unknowns, and it’s normal to feel unsure. A physiotherapist can answer your questions, explain what’s happening in your body, and help you feel more in control. Just having someone who understands what you're going through can make a big difference.
Physiotherapy isn’t just for after the baby arrives. Starting early can help you feel stronger, more comfortable, and ready for the months ahead. If you’re in your first trimester and want support, talk to one of our physiotherapists who have a special interest in women’s health—they’re here to help you every step of the way.
